Conversion isn't one thing - it's five things stacked in order. Miss any one of them and the whole campaign underperforms, no matter how strong the rest is.
The single biggest lever, and the one most businesses skip straight past. A weak offer - vague, generic, no clear value - caps performance no matter how good everything else is. A specific, compelling offer ("Free 15-minute consultation this week" beats "Contact us for a quote") does more for conversion than any amount of creative polish.
Whether the ad earns attention in the first 1-2 seconds of video or the first line of copy. The hook's only job is to stop the scroll - it doesn't need to sell anything yet, just make the viewer curious enough to keep watching or reading.
The visual or video quality, format, and overall production. This matters, but less than most businesses assume - a rough, authentic phone video with a strong offer regularly outperforms a polished studio shoot with a weak one.
Even a perfect ad fails if it's shown to the wrong people. Targeting is a filter, not a magic switch - it decides who's eligible to see the ad, while the other four factors decide what happens once they do.
The final step, and the one most commonly overlooked. A slow-loading website, a confusing multi-field form, or a landing page that doesn't match the ad's promise loses people right at the finish line - after the hardest work (getting attention) is already done.
| If you see... | The likely broken link is... |
|---|---|
| Low click-through rate | Hook or creative |
| Good clicks, no leads/sales | Offer or landing page/form |
| Cheap results at first, then rising cost | Audience fatigue or creative fatigue |
| Clicks from clearly wrong people | Audience/targeting |
